Pre-orders have been open since June 25, launch lands November 19, and the question keeps arriving: can you buy GTA 6 for someone else? Neither console storefront gives you a clean way to gift a GTA 6 pre-order. Here's what's confirmed, what's only reported, and the workarounds that actually hold up.
Why there's no gift button
Grand Theft Auto VI arrives November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate, both confirmed in Take-Two's official pre-order announcement. What no store offers is a "send this pre-order to a friend" option. Sony doesn't gift games at all, Microsoft's gifting feature reportedly won't touch unreleased titles, and the physical edition is a download code in a box.
| Route | Gift a pre-order today? | What they get | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store direct | No: PSN has no game gifting | Nothing; the feature doesn't exist | Sony's official answer is gift cards |
| PSN gift card | Yes, indirectly | Wallet credit; they place the pre-order | Cover $79.99 or $99.99, plus a buffer |
| Xbox Buy as gift | Reportedly not until release | A redeemable code, on released games only | Same country/region; 14-day refunds on unredeemed codes |
| Boxed copy at retail | Yes | A box holding a download code, no disc | Boxes go on sale November 12, 2026 |
PlayStation: gift cards or nothing
Sony is the simple case. PlayStation doesn't support gifting a specific game or pre-order to another PSN account, and Sony's own gift card page calls gift cards "the go-to way of gifting games", a polite way of saying: hand over credit and let them press the button.
The upside: credit covers either edition, and leftovers stay in their wallet. The downside: no surprise in their library, and they must order before November 20, 2026 to get the extras: the Vintage Vice City Pack, plus a free GTA+ month on digital orders, per the PlayStation Store listing.
One reported wrinkle: GamingBible reported in late June that the only savings buyers had found on the $79.99/$99.99 editions was discounted PSN credit: £90 for £74.96, about 15% off, via third-party seller Eneba. That's a report, not a recommendation. I'd buy cards from a retailer you already trust.
Xbox: a gift button that reportedly won't help yet
Microsoft actually built the feature: eligible product pages carry a Buy as gift option that delivers a redeemable code. The confirmed rules: giver and recipient must be in the same country or region, unredeemed codes are refundable only within 14 days of purchase, nothing comes back after redemption, and heavy gifters can hit a cap that locks the feature for up to 30 days.
The catch is eligibility. Community reports consistently say the option appears only on released products, so an unreleased pre-order like GTA 6 reportedly can't be sent as a gift. Microsoft's documentation doesn't spell that restriction out, but nothing on its gifting page contradicts it either. So Xbox's realistic pre-launch options mirror PlayStation's: gift-card credit now, or a properly gifted copy after November 19.
The code-in-a-box is the only thing you can wrap
Want something to put under wrapping paper? Retail, with an asterisk. According to Rockstar's own store, every box holds a download code and no disc; that goes for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S releases alike, across both the Standard and Ultimate tiers, whatever some outlets suggest about the Ultimate being digital-only. Rockstar's support pages add that boxed copies go on sale November 12, 2026, in time to redeem and pre-load before launch.
As a gift object it works: you pre-order without touching the recipient's account and hand the box over yourself. RockstarINTEL reported Amazon's initial US batch sold out within an hour of pre-orders opening June 25, then restocked the same day, so stock pressure is real but hardly desperate.
Two cautions. The code redeems on the recipient's account, so buy in the market where they actually live: Xbox's digital gifting rule is explicitly same-country, and I'd apply that logic to any boxed code too. And nothing physical exists to hand over until boxes ship from November 12. If plans shift before then, retail orders are the easiest to unwind (Best Buy confirms it doesn't charge your card until the item ships) and our cancellation and refund guide has the store-by-store detail.
Gift-card math for both editions
The arithmetic is easy; the buffer is the point. In the US you need $79.99 for Standard or $99.99 for Ultimate, so an exact $80 or $100 leaves almost nothing for tax where storefronts add it. I'd load $90 or $110 and let the remainder sit in their wallet. The same logic applies at the confirmed regional prices: £69.99/£89.99 in the UK, €79.99/€99.99 in the Eurozone, CA$109.99/CA$139.99 in Canada.
The $20 gap between editions matters too. On Xbox, a confirmed $20.00 Ultimate Edition Upgrade converts Standard into Ultimate later. On PlayStation, the equivalent upgrade page currently can't be purchased, so if your PS5 giftee might want the extra cars and cosmetics, fund the Ultimate up front. Not sure which tier fits them? Our editions breakdown compares what the extra $20 buys.
Mind the GTA+ auto-renew on their account
Digital pre-orders placed before November 20 include one free month of GTA+, and that freebie has teeth. Official store pages say it auto-renews at the regular monthly price until canceled (the standalone subscription is a confirmed $7.99 a month on the US PlayStation Store) and outlets including GameSpot have warned the renewal is on by default. Deadlines differ by platform: PlayStation's listing says redeem by March 31, 2027, while Xbox's says within 180 days of placing the pre-order. PlayStation's page also calls the month non-transferable and one per account.
If you fund someone's pre-order, tell them to set a cancellation reminder the day they redeem. Our GTA+ auto-renew warning has the details. One open question: whether boxed copies get the free month at all. Rockstar's store files it under digital-store bonuses and outlets report the physical edition misses out, but no official page settles it.
FAQ
Can I gift a game directly on the PlayStation Store?
No. PSN has no gifting for games or pre-orders. Sony officially points gift-givers to PlayStation Store gift cards; the recipient places the pre-order themselves.
Does Xbox's Buy as gift option work on GTA 6 right now?
Reportedly not. Community reports say the option shows only on released products. After the November 19 launch, normal gifting rules apply: same country or region, and unredeemed codes are refundable within 14 days.
How much gift-card credit covers each edition?
$79.99 Standard or $99.99 Ultimate in the US, £69.99/£89.99 in the UK, €79.99/€99.99 in the Eurozone, and CA$109.99/CA$139.99 in Canada. Round up so tax doesn't strand the purchase a dollar short.
Does the physical edition include a disc I can gift?
No. Per Rockstar's official store, boxes for both editions contain a download code only. They go on sale November 12, 2026, one week before launch.
Can I buy a boxed copy in one country and gift it to someone in another?
I wouldn't risk it. Xbox's digital gifting requires both parties in the same country or region; the safe play for any code is buying in the recipient's own market.
The bottom line
There's no official way to drop a GTA 6 pre-order into someone else's library before November 19.
Until then, the dependable gift is store credit sized to the edition they want ($79.99 or $99.99 in the US, rounded up) and the only wrappable one is the code-in-a-box arriving from November 12. Treat anyone selling "giftable" pre-order codes with suspicion: Sony offers no such product, and Microsoft's gift option reportedly doesn't cover unreleased games.
