Pull up the US PlayStation Store listing today and you'll see a PS5 Pro Enhanced badge, a November 19, 2026 release date, and no install size at all. As of July 23, Rockstar hasn't published a download figure anywhere. That's worth stating plainly, because plenty of sites present a number as settled fact. It isn't.
The estimates, though, are reasonable. GamesRadar and other outlets peg the install at roughly 150GB to 200GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X, working from Rockstar's own history (Red Dead Redemption 2 comes in around 150GB, GTA V around 95GB) while stressing that Rockstar has confirmed nothing. Storage-prep coverage goes a step further, predicting a day-one patch of 15GB to 30GB on top of the base install and recommending you keep about 250GB free before the download starts.
That 250GB figure is the one I'd actually plan around.
If the estimates run high, you've lost nothing. If they run low, you won't be frantically deleting games at midnight on November 12 while your preload sits at zero percent.
The 676.7GB "leak" is a fake
You may have seen a screenshot of an Xbox store listing showing GTA 6 at a monstrous 676.7GB. It went viral, and it has been debunked. The tell was right there in the image: a listed Xbox One compatibility line for a game that officially exists only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Coverage of the hoax noted fans clocked it as another "67" joke almost immediately.
The lesson generalizes. Until Rockstar or an official store page publishes a size, treat every screenshot claiming one as noise.
How much room your console actually has
Advertised capacity is not usable capacity: the system software takes its share before you install a single game. Microsoft's console page also lists a 2TB Galaxy Black Series X, though reporting around the August 1 price increases says that model is being discontinued. Either way, the Series S is the machine that genuinely needs a plan.

If deleting won't get you there, the two console families expand storage in very different ways, and at very different prices.
PS5: standard M.2, strict requirements
Sony's official support page says PS5 consoles accept PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 drives from 250GB up to 8TB, in form factors 2230 through 22110. Sony recommends sequential read speeds of 5,500MB/s or faster and requires proper heat dissipation; in practice, buy a drive with a heatsink or fit one yourself.
Prices aren't kind right now. GamesRadar's July 2026 tracking shows PS5-compatible 2TB drives trending upward, with the WD Black SN850X 2TB around £297 (after peaking near £490 in late January) and the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB at about £291. Upward is the operative word.
Xbox: licensed expansion cards only
Series X|S consoles don't take bare M.2 sticks. They use proprietary, officially licensed expansion cards, and per Windows Central's price coverage, WD's Black C50 runs about $149-$150 for 1TB, with the 2TB version recently spotted at $212.49. Seagate's 1TB card sits around $150-$160.
